Tuesday 15 September, 10 - 4 p.m.: Workshop: Making Patterns, Painting Fabric with Sarah Campbell at the William Morris Society
The William Morris Society, 26 Upper Mall, London W6 9TA
Sarah Campbell is an internationally acclaimed textile designer who, together with her late sister Susan Collier, founded and ran a groundbreaking and renowned design partnership, creating iconic fabrics for the industry's greatest names for more than 50 years. Love of pattern and colour and an inventive freshness are the hallmarks of her work. She now works on her own – making, teaching, writing, and continuing to paint designs, patterns and pictures on cloth and paper both for commercial production and to special commission. She is the author of the recently published book HandPainted Textiles, a Practical Guide to the Art of Painting on Fabrics, and co-author, with Emma Shackleton, of The Collier Campbell Archive, fifty years of passion in pattern. She has also self published two books The Art of Pattern and Dailies. The exhibition Paint!Pattern!Print! has just opened at The Fashion+Textile Museum – a celebration of the entire life's work of the sisters and their studio from the earliest days to the current moment. It runs until September 13, 2026. Some of the work of her sister and herself is currently showing in the exhibition Women in Print at the William Morris Gallery, a celebration of Liberty's 150th birthday in 2025.
Sarah's workshop is hosted by The William Morris Society, a charity which aims to promote the life, work and ideas of William Morris as well as his daughter May Morris as they are as important today as they were in their lifetimes and make them accessible to all. The variety of Morris’s ideas and activities bring together those who are interested in him as a designer, craftsman, poet, and socialist, who admire his robust and generous personality, his creative energy and his courage. His ideas on how we might live, on creative work, leisure and machinery, on ecology and conservation, on politics and the place of arts in our lives remain as stimulating now as they were over a century ago.
Event Description
Join Sarah at the William Morris Society for a truly unique workshop experience in a magical setting. Inspired by the delights of the natural world, Sarah will show and discuss different approaches to painting patterns and designs directly onto fabric. Starting with smaller practice pieces in the morning, participants will be able to develop their skills and ideas, and after lunch move on to painting their designs directly onto a cotton tote bag or cushion cover that they can take away with them. As part of the workshop a member of staff of the society will show participants a select group of items from our collection, not currently on display.
Paints, brushes, fabrics and other necessaries will be provided; participants may like to bring their own favourite paintbrushes if they have them, any special pattern and colour references they may have – and possibly an apron.
You will hopefully go home with new skills, your new creations and perhaps a fresh understanding of pattern and design.
This workshop is open to people of all abilities and experience.
Teas, coffees and biscuits will be provided.
