Tuesday 22 September, 2 - 5 p.m.: Talk and Pop-up: Rachael Howard: People Who Own My Ties
Campbell Works Gallery, 27 Belfast Road, Stoke Newington, London N16 6UN
Rachael Howard has spent three decades transforming the traditional necktie into an unexpected form of textile storytelling. Working with appliqué, screen printing and machine embroidery, she creates richly detailed silk ties that bring together figurative imagery, wit and meticulous craftsmanship.
Her distinctive approach first gained wider recognition in the 1990s when her work caught the attention of Paul Smith, leading to a series of exclusive collections. Since then, Howard has continued to build an independent practice that turns an everyday accessory into a playful and deeply personal object, exploring the ways textiles can prompt conversation and connection.
Event Description
Rachael Howard will present People Who Own My Ties at Campbell Works, an exhibition that brings together her most distinctive collections alongside a film documenting the stories of those who wear them. Featuring designs from series such as Swimmers, Objects from Around the House and Rabbots, the exhibition reveals how these intricately made pieces become catalysts for unexpected encounters.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors will have the chance to see Howard working in the gallery with her sewing machine, offering a rare glimpse into her creative process. Alongside the exhibition, she will lead Covetous Covered Buttons, a hands-on workshop inviting participants to experiment with silk, cotton and mixed-media techniques to create their own singular textile keepsake.
