Friday 4 September, 2 - 5 p.m.: Tour: The American Museum and Gardens, Bath

The American Museum & Gardens ,Claverton Down, Bath BA2 7BD, UK

The American Museum & Gardens was founded in 1961 by the Anglo-American collectors Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn to share the richness of American decorative arts with audiences in Britain and to broaden understanding of American cultural history.

Set within 125 acres of landscaped grounds on the edge of Bath, the museum holds more than 12,000 objects, ranging from textiles and folk art to rare maps, Native American works and decorative interiors. Its collections reveal the depth and diversity of American craftsmanship, while the surrounding gardens, including the celebrated New American Garden designed by Oehme, van Sweden, place this transatlantic vision within the rolling English landscape. Together, the museum and gardens offer a distinctive setting in which art, history and landscape are closely intertwined.

Event Description

Visitors are invited to discover the museum’s internationally regarded textile collection through a guided tour led by one of the museum’s specialists. The collection includes more than 200 historic quilts and rugs dating from the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century, with examples ranging from whole-cloth and appliquéd quilts to Hawaiian, Amish and Gee’s Bend pieces.

During the tour, guests will gain a deeper understanding of the construction, craftsmanship and social histories woven into these remarkable works, while exploring textiles displayed throughout the museum’s period rooms.

Following the tour, visitors can enjoy a cream tea in the museum’s deli overlooking the gardens and the Cotswold landscape beyond, with time to explore the museum’s permanent galleries and the surrounding grounds at their own pace.

The American Museum & Gardens is located 3 miles from Bath city centre. Visitors can arrive via car, taxi or bus. The bus stop is a ten minute walk to the museum.
